community service-aleppo pine removal

today we helped the SYP landcare group with removing the aleppo pine and removing plastic covers and sticks which held them up from the native plans in the areas. all together wardli 2 and 5 took the covers off 1000 plants.

the aleppo pine is a native to the mediterranean regions like itlay and greece. it was planted in the yorke peninsula as a forestry tree and a plant for shelter. the aleppo pine is a problem to the peninsula because the roots amage the roads and it robs the soil of moisture and nutrients. the landcare group is keen to eradicate this plant because it reduces the habitat of birds and it competes with the native vegetation.

i think the reasons the people volunteer to remove the aleppo pine is to see something that is not Australian in the yorke peninsula and from what i have seen they are very australian. another reason is that they don't want the roads to be destroyed and they don't want the birds which they have grown up with wipped out. this this a good thing to do because we can make the australian outback more australian for the future.
